Overview

With a first class Master’s degree in Physics, Matthew is a Chartered UK and European patent attorney with fifteen years’ experience specialising predominantly in engineering and tech. Although he has worked broadly across these fields, he has always held a personal interest in the medical device and renewable energy sectors. He also has worked consistently on cross-disciplinary matters with colleagues in other technical fields, particularly life sciences. Recent work highlights include:

  • Overseeing hundreds of European patent applications and registered design applications for one of the world’s largest healthcare companies.
  • Lead attorney in a team that succeeded in a High Court trial involving two patents, as well as two registered and two unregistered designs. Matthew conducted the expert witness interviews before preparing the witness statement and was present in Court to support barristers and interact with the client.
  • Defending a crucial European patent before the Opposition Division where the opponent’s case involved a complex allegation of prior use supplemented by many lengthy citations in English and German. The Division was enlarged to include a legal member and two German fact witnesses were cross-examined in significant detail.
  • Instructing high-value appeals before the Japanese Patent Office (JPO) and the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO).

Experience

Matthew is a strong advocate for building close attorney-client relationships, often spending extended periods at his clients’ headquarters to gain a deeper understanding of their operations. He recognizes the often overlooked value of registered and unregistered designs, ensuring that his clients are aware of opportunities in this area. With a particular interest in the UK Patent Box, Matthew tailors the prosecution of patent applications to help clients benefit from this valuable tax reduction system. His expertise also extends to providing infringement and validity opinions, guiding clients strategically through complex business situations. Additionally, Matthew is well-versed in regulatory matters related to medical devices, including the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) and In Vitro Diagnostic Regulation (IVDR).
