Overview
Elisha Kohanbash is an associate at Caldwell with a practice centered on patent prosecution, portfolio strategy, and intellectual property counseling. He brings a rare combination of hands-on USPTO experience, in-house perspective, and deep technical knowledge across mechanical engineering, aerospace, and other emerging technologies. Elisha is currently leading the expansion of the firm’s aerospace and energy practice group.
Experience
Elisha has drafted hundreds of patent applications spanning aerospace and propulsion systems, mechanical design, machine learning, artificial intelligence, medical devices, and autonomous systems. He regularly advises clients on patent portfolio development and has created investor-facing portfolio analyses to support business development and fundraising efforts. Elisha has guided clients through seven-figure funding rounds, providing IP counsel that helps position companies for growth and investor scrutiny.
His litigation support experience includes drafting motions and responses in federal circuit proceedings, as well as preparing freedom-to-operate analyses to help clients navigate competitive landscapes and manage risk.
Prior to joining the firm, Elisha gained broad exposure to all sides of the IP ecosystem. He interned in the Central Reexamination Unit at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, giving him firsthand insight into how examiners evaluate patent validity. He served as an in-house counsel intern working directly alongside chief counsel on patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate matters, and active litigation. He also worked in the Intellectual Property practice group at Nixon Peabody, assisting with IP litigation and prosecution. Earlier in his career, he held technical internships at NASA, King Neutronics, and TANMS Research Laboratories while attending UCLA, where he developed the engineering foundation that informs his patent work today.
